Can I keep my phone number or get a new one when switching to Gen Mobile?

Yes! We offer both options. You can:

  • Keep Your Current Number (Porting): You can easily transfer (port) your existing number to Gen Mobile. To ensure a smooth transition, do not cancel your current service until the transfer is complete. For porting instructions, click here.

  • Get a New Number: If you’d prefer a fresh start, we can assign you a new local phone number during activation.

Note: To use a Gen Mobile SIM or eSIM, your device must be carrier unlocked, not lost or stolen, and compatible with our network.

What is the difference between a physical SIM card and an eSIM and which should I choose?

A physical SIM card is a small chip you insert into your phone to connect to Gen Mobile’s network. Gen Mobile provides a 3 in 1 SIM card that lets you pop out and insert the size that fits your device.

An eSIM is an electronic chip built into your phone that lets you activate a mobile plan over WiFi or using cellular data without the need to physically insert a SIM card. Once activated, your eSIM works just like a physical SIM for talk, text, and data.

If your phone is unlocked and compatible, Gen Mobile offers both physical SIM cards and eSIM options, giving you the flexibility to support multiple phone lines—each with its own number—on the same device.

Can I add a second phone line without buying a new phone?

Yes. If your phone is unlocked and supports dual physical SIM or eSIM technology, you can use two phone numbers on a single device. This is a convenient way to keep work and personal calls separate or stay connected while traveling without carrying an extra phone.

If your device supports eSIM, you can activate your second line digitally using the setup instructions sent to your phone, typically in the form of a push notification. If you prefer a physical SIM card, Gen Mobile can ship a SIM kit to your door.

How do I check which type of SIM my device uses?

You can check your phone settings to see whether your device uses a physical SIM, an eSIM, or supports both.

iPhone

Go to Settings > General > About.

  • Scroll to Available SIM or EID. If you see an EID, your iPhone supports eSIM.

  • iPhone 14 through iPhone 17 models purchased in the United States are eSIM only and do not have a physical SIM slot.

Android phones

Go to Settings > Connections or Network and Internet > SIM Settings or SIM Manager.

  • If you see an option to add an eSIM or Download a SIM, your phone supports digital activation using your eSIM.

  • If you see SIM 1 and SIM 2 listed, your phone uses a physical SIM only but can support multiple phone lines—each with its own number—on the same device.

To add a second line with Gen Mobile, your phone must be carrier unlocked. Most carriers unlock devices automatically once the device is paid in full. How do I activate a Gen Mobile eSIM?

Activating a Gen Mobile eSIM is a simple way to start your service. After you place your order, your eSIM will be processed within one business day. Once it’s ready, you’ll receive a push notification on your device to start the setup. Just tap the notification and follow the on-screen steps to complete your eSIM activation. Make sure your device is connected to a trusted Wi-Fi or has an active cellular connection during setup.
